Made in Europe - Lesley Knox

Lesley Knox, United Kingdom - Layers

I was inspired by the layers of history in Harris in the Outer Hebrides where I have a home. The lazybeds in the top part remember all the people who were once crofters and then had to emigrate (some people believe they were the inspiration for log cabin patterns) .The stones in the bottom part are the ruined houses they left behind. The megaliths in the middle piece reflect the inhabitants who first settled on the islands before the Bronze Age and have left no trace except for these monuments. The sea in the top part and peat diggings in the bottom piece are key sources of livelihood and warmth even today .The sunrise /sunset in the middle evoke the passage of time.

Pieced and applique work , markal applied in some parts, machine quilted on domestic machine.

Commercial and self- dyed cottons, silk and satin pieces.

Made in Europe - Liz Hewitt

Liz Hewitt, United Kingdom - Take a Leaf.....

Memories of walks through an autumnal English woodland, are captured in a moment of time with stitch and cloth. The joy of being with the trees, the stillness and peace you feel as you take each step are recorded within the quilt like structure, reminding you of the way leaves form a comforting blanket on the earth. The leaves gathered on these walks are imprinted, as ghostly forms within the fabric, capturing the beauty and essence of the individual leaf.

Eco dyed silk fabrics, machine quilted

Made in Europe - Chantal Guillermet

Chantal GUILLERMET, France - Coming back home

This is the second piece of a series about the Guérande Peninsula traditions. Harvesting sea salt has always been a local and ancestral human activity in this part of France. The woman, a salt worker, is coming back home at sunset holding a dish of salt on her head. The warm colours of sunset are reflecting into the water of the salt marshes basins.

The woman's silhouette was inspired by the work of Jean Fréour a local sculptor and by several 19th century engravings.

The prints represents the movement of water and the salt.  Hand embroideries is used to enhance the prints and to represent saltwort plants on the foreground.

Basins : Background cut out, shapes slide into the holes and fused on the batting.

Lino prints, stencilling, free  motion quilting, hand embroideries. Soldering iron for the silhouette.

Hand-dyed poplin and thread, batik, organza, acrylic paint, rayon thread

Made in Europe - Christa Ebert

Christa Ebert, Germany - Ikarus

Ikarus was a figure of the greek mythology. Together with his father Daedalus he was a prisoner in the labyrinth of Crete. In order to escape from there Daedalus constructed wings made of feathers and wax. Trying to fly Ikarus ignored his father´s warning not to fly too close to the sun. So the wax in his wings melted and he fell down into the sea.

My quilt shows the wing with the feathers and melted wax on it.

Rectangles of polyester and polyester organza are burnt at the edges and afterwards appliqued on a ground.

Sateen, polyester, polyester organza, polyester vlies.

Made in Europe - DAMSS

D. Arnoldi & M. Sarzi-Sartori, Italy - Castelluccio_The ghost town

The work is a tribute to Castelluccio di Norcia, the village which was completely destroyed by the earthquake on August 24th, 2016. The village is well known for the nature of its fields of lavish red and yellow coloured flowers and for its excellent lentils. We recreated the image and atmosphere of this typical Umbrian village as it was before the disaster, over a hill with flowering fields so as not to forget the suffering of people, who have been torn from their homes and their future.

Appliquè, freemotion, embroidery, twisted yarns.

Silk, wool, cotton, lace, thread.

Made in Europe - Stephanie Crawford

Stephanie Crawford, UK - And then three come along at once...

The idea for this quilt came to me following a walk through London at rush hour in November.  I had been to an exhibition at Tate Modern and was feeling inspired.  The sky was beautiful in early evening but no-one was looking at it!  It is not of anywhere in particular.

I did a drawing, which I then scaled up and drew out on a closely woven cotton.  It is painted with fabric paints and then stitched.

Drawing, painting on whole-cloth and free machine stitching.

Cotton, fabric paint and assorted threads.

Made in Europe - Jette Clover

Jette Clover, Belgium - Monday Morning Conversation

I love words. They have shapes and sounds and they convey meaning. I was a journalist before I became an artist, and now stitching has become a new way of writing for me. Stitching resembles the rhythm of writing with a pen on paper - a slow, intimate process during which one becomes aware of the marking of time.

Screen printing, painting, flour paste printing, collage, hand- and machine stitching.

Cotton, organdy, cheese cloth.

Elizabeth Byrom, France -  Dinan Sous la Pluie

Dinan, a charming town in Brittany, France, is as beautiful in the rain as it is in sunlight. Luminescent colors, curved roof lines, and stone chimneys compel the artist to try to capture its essence.  In this quilt the scene is depicted with silks dyed lilac and blue violet with fiber reactive dyes.

Made in Europe - Joke

Joke Buursma, Ireland - Ogham, Old Celtic Script II

This work is an abstract impression of the Ogham script.

Ogham, an ancient rune-like writing system, is carved in stones across Ireland and Britain. The Ogham script recorded the earliest Old Irish texts dating between the 3rd and the 6th century CE. Mostly they are genealogical inscriptions in the form of "X son of Y" on corners of large stone slabs. When inscribed on stones, Ogham is written vertically from bottom to top. The symbols are made up of single strokes, each one represented by one, two, three, four or five strokes.

Eszter Bornemisza, Hungary - Ab Ovo

In 1996 I visited an art quilt exhibition in Lyon first time in my life. It was a revelation that started me experimenting with making contemporary quilts. This piece is a reflection on the twenty years of my quilting. I collaged some detail shots of my earlier pieces and combined them  with my recently created airy netted material.

Made in Europe - Khurshid

Khurshid Bamboat, UK - This Green and Pleasant Land

I challenged myself to use a restricted colour palette – this is the result. As a young child, I 'commuted' at least three times a year from 1951 to 1958 between Karachi and London and the cloth reminded me of what I used to see from the air.  To this day, flying over England still reminds me of those 'patchwork' fields.
