Ready to volunteer for SAQA?

SAQA's activities depend on members' willingness to volunteer, and here is a wonderful possibility to start getting involved. The following request has been posted to the reps, but is directed to every member:

The membership committee is forming a subcommittee to brainstorm, researchand recommend new initiatives and avenues for membership recruitment both internationally and within the U.S. We anticipate that this subcommitteewill meet three to six times for an hour or so each time. Additionally thesubcommittee members will be invited to attend the monthly membershipmeeting to provide updates on their progress and make theirrecommendations. All meetings are held electronically and can be attended via computer, tablet or smart phone depending on where you are located. It’s importantthat this committee to be made up of both international and US basedmembers and we invite all members who are interested to email the committeechairs Diane Wright or Sue Bleiweiss via the SAQA members area of the website,

or  get in touch with the co-reps.

Wide Horizons - Krakatua 1883

This is the detail image of my entry to Wide Horizons -

Statement:
The small volcanic island, Krakatua, off the west coast of Java, erupted in 1883. One of the most deadly in modern history, its effects were felt in Africa and Australasia. From a beach house overlooking Krakatua, we enjoyed evening vistas of a mildly smoking Krakatua against the setting sun. Amazing.
Techniques:
The hand dyed cloth represents the sea, sand, volcanic ash and fires of Krakatua whilst the mark making symbolises the turmoil on land and sea created by the event.
Materials:
Own hand dyed fabrics, mono-printed marks. Improvisational cutting and piecing. Simple machine stitch.

Wide Horizons

Uta Lenk, Silver Lining (Play of Lines XXXVI)

Materials: hand-dyed fabrics, reflector fabric, metallic thread
Techniques: machine pieced, machine quilted, and additional hand-stitching

Inspiration: As I was contemplating a piece that should have been using the word 'horizon' in various European languages, I was collecting proverbs that include that word. Of course, the 'every horizon has a silver lining' came up as well, and as I had recently bought some reflecting fabric I started playing around with that.

Size: height 130 cm, width 92 cm
