Made in Europe II - Elizabeth MICHELLOD-DUTHEIL


She  collects and dissects any object that suits her inspiration, be it vegetal, manufactured or industrial. She likes to explore new ways of using and combining those materials.
In some of her works, the thread is a guideline and the fabric becomes a support. By accumulating various materials, abstract figures are created that combine into a more complex design, not unlike a bas-relief.

Always searching for new colours, she  uses pasting, superimposition of fabrics and dyeing processes. This is probably one of the many singular aspects of her artwork.
She, also makes great use of photographs. She tries to capture the atmosphere and the emotions of a place, to later transcribe them in her drawings or her textile artwork. This way, her work can be seen as witnesses of nature, life and past times.

Made in Europe II - Stephanie Crwford

Protest at the RCJ  (Made in Europe II)

The idea for this quilt came on the same walk that inspired my Made in Europe 1 piece. 

A friend and I had been to an exhibition at Tate Modern and were walking along The Strand, passing the Royal Courts of Justice.  Memories flooded back of when I worked in family law, before retirement, and would travel from Bristol to the RCJ in London most weeks.  Often, after court, I would leave the building and run into a protest of some kind or huge media attention for someone famous.  I still, occasionally, miss the buzz.

I love the building and the idea to represent it grew in my mind.
I visited again to take photographs.  You never actually see this view as, using artistic licence, I removed some obstacles and made free with the layout in order to achieve the perspective I wanted.

The outlines were drawn in pencil on white cotton and then freely stitched and finally painted.  I added appliqued pieces where appropriate.

Made in Europe II - Maryte Collard

Flax has been a traditional Lithuanian fiber for several thousand years.

Lithuanians have given a special place in their folklore and overall perception of the world to this plant, which has accompanied them since ancient times.
Making this quilt I decided to take a look back into my heritage and to use only Lithuanian made linen fabrics. It is not what I usually work with, not the colors I like, but something I grew up with, something that is deeply in my genes and in my blood, and it still sings to me.

For inspiration I drove to the Hill of Crosses, located close by. I saw thousands  of crosses, traditional, and the ones with radiating spikes, that are linked to the sun and to the pagan world tree. I saw colors and textures of a new and aged wood, rusted metal, dirt, covered with dried leaves from the last fall, and sprouts of a new grass coming out. Colors of nature, colors of my country, colors of linen...

This quilt is my tribute to Lithuanian linen.

The last time in Paris, I took my quilt sandwiches outside to paint, stitch and embellish with found items. These four tell the story of my visit: Eiffel tower, my house entrance, "Paris is blooming," and the Seine.

Made in Europe II - Louise Bell

'Sussex Trees' - horse chestnut, oak, hawthorn, elm, ivy, rowan and sycamore leaves with their seeds and berries.

I plan as I pin, a quilt taking shape as I work. I started this one at the top with horse chestnut and oak as they always soar above other trees. I then worked downwards, enjoying the flashes of red berry against the sky blue background. Rain and sun often travel together here, making leaves and berries glossy, giving the landscape  the look of a varnished oil painting.

The leaves are not to scale in relation to each other - hawthorn has small leaves but the contrast with its bright berries magnifies its importance in a treescape.

I used Liberty lawns to frame the work, the colours and tightly packed designs echoing the centre panel. I vermicelli quilted around the motifs, the texture of the quilted linen contrasting with the smooth appliqué.

Machine appliqué, free machine detailing, pieced border. Machine quilted using free embroidery foot and darning setting on domestic Bernina.

Linen ground, cotton appliqué, cotton mix backing and 2oz polyester wadding.
